Muni Bus for Sale

Got a spare $12K laying around? If you do, check out this steal: a 1969 GMC Fishbowl New Look bus with a rad orange Muni paint job is up for auction on eBay. You read that right: There’s a Muni bus for sale. We’ve told you about New Look buses on Muni Time Capsule before. Check out that post if you’re thinking about making a bid.

This isn’t the first bus on sale — the guys at SFist spotted another bus for sale last year. We’ve also seen a Muni fare box for sale on Craigslist. If you’re the one who bought that fare box, why not buy a bus to keep it company? Or maybe this is perfect for the kind of person who’d buy a Muni shelter?

We’ll do our best to keep up with the auction and get in touch with the winning bidder.

Before and After Muni Sightings with OldSF

Jeff and I fell down the OldSF.org rabbit hole again and found some photos of Muni in the old days. The photo of Cala Foods above is the site of an old cable car barn near California and Hyde. We found a lot more before and after photos where Muni makes a cameo. A closeup of the old building on California and Hyde:

The superintendent checks out the fleet in the barn.

We found some more examples — see if you can spot some familiar landmarks.

Or how about this, on Fifth and Mission?

We have a ton of old timey Muni ephemera over at Muni Time Capsule too. Check it out or share your own story and photos in the time capsule with us.

1980 Flashback: Muni Metro Inauguration Party

D. Robert Foster, who shared an old Muni ticket/transfer on Muni Diaries a few weeks ago, sends along the amazing poster above, and notes:

This is a poster from the May 1980 grand opening party for the Metro system at Castro Street Station. Entertainment by Sylvester, DJs Howie Klein (415 Records), and Larry LaRue. As I remember, ticket holders were eligibile to be among the first people to ride the system by boarding cars at Church Street and then riding right into the party.

Can you imagine how amazing? I almost can, but not quite. Also, where else but the Castro could a soirée this awesome be found?

Thanks, Mr. Foster!

Also, commenters Mike and Gerard shared video from the party. Wild, fun times.

Thanks, Mike and Gerard!
