VIDEO: Unable to choose, Chicago subway train takes escalator and stairs

Ever had a scary moment when you realized you were standing too close for comfort to an approaching subway train? Chicago subway riders had that experience times a thousand Monday when a train at the O’Hare International Airport jumped the tracks, careening up a escalator and set of stairs before stopping. More than two dozen people were injured in the crash, believed to have been caused by the train’s operator falling asleep at the controls.

See the dramatic video here.

Uh, yeah … holy crap. After seeing this, we don’t care how slow Muni moves.

BART is about to get slower, you guys

New safety procedures put in place after the death of two BART maintenance workers last year have already brought the system’s on-time rate down. And things are about to get even worse for riders. Matier and Ross have the details:

Operators were also required either to slow down to 27 mph or bring their trains to a halt until work is complete, depending on the circumstances. In some cases, trains in both directions are switched to a single track, allowing them to be rerouted around job sites.

Those safety measures, according to BART, have caused the district’s overall on-time service to decline in recent months from 94.4 percent to 92.1 percent.

“It doesn’t seem like a lot … but riders are feeling it,” says BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost.

And the delays are likely to get worse.

New state and federal regulations set to become effective this May will “mean longer and more frequent train delays,” according to BART officials.

And here I was under the impression that it was Muni’s job to be slow.

So, safety=good; longer waits=bad?

Discomfort-inducing Muni attire induces discomfort

mom_hat

And you thought those FBI (female body inspector) hats were terrible. In addition to marveling at that now comparably innocuous message, I’m left wondering why and how time and effort went into this DIY project.

Via Muni rider thinlizzy6669: “‘Your mom fucks like a real pro!! Your dad just lays there taking it in the ass…and crying.’ Wtf??”

OK, would you rather:

Be seated face-to-face with this hat for a realllllly long Muni ride. A 49-Van Ness in rush hour traffic, kind of realllly long ride.

or

Be yelled at or near with similar language for a couple minutes.

VIDEO: RoboCop gives the smackdown to train perverts in Japan

robocop

In what has to be the oddest most badass public service campaign ever, the Osaka Police Department has been using a man dressed as RoboCop to patrol trains and protect women from handsy men and other train riding perverts. According to Britain’s Daily Mirror, RoboCop can make arrests and also warns passengers to keep an eye on their valuables. Or as the police department’s website puts it: “RoboCop is a hammer of justice to molesters threatening women.” That’s more like it.

Sometimes real life is even better than the movie. Now, if we’d only had RoboCop to deal with the Muni Humper.
