Spotted on Muni: The World’s Most Famous Dog

No, it’s not Lassie. Doesn’t this Muni passenger look just like Boo, the world’s cutest dog? Sidenote: I heard a story at Porchlight from Boo’s literary agent (that’s right) about the time when she took Boo and Boo’s mom, I mean, owner, to an appearance on Good Morning America. He sounded like quite the charmer.

We’ve got more animals on Muni over here for your Monday morning.

Should this happen on Muni?

We all have our ideas of right and wrong. And those norms don’t take a back seat when we ride Muni. Nor should they.

Here are some questionable things seen and smelled on Muni this week:

  • A woman just crawled on the streetcar with an open tallboy of Old English. Happy Monday! #MuniDiaries
  • On the 33 line and for the first time, saw a driver curse out a passenger!
  • Old woman dressed entirely in black on #sfmuni brushing the hair of a creepy doll. Quota for the macabre, fulfilled.
  • Someone pooped on the bus during my morning commute. #sfmuni
  • man picks nose. smears findings on bus wall. my stomach… #munidiaries

This week’s Things on Muni is brought to you by fellow Muni riders @pjrocks12, @findslt, @keaneiscool, @laurenylee, and @a_pisceslife. You, too, can contribute at @munidiaries.

Transit News: Muni-related accidents, Muni funding, Google buses, BART news

Man, there sure have been a lot of Muni-related accidents lately, right? That guy who hit-run pedestrians and a Muni bus was charged with hella crimes. Not to be outdone, a Muni train struck a pedestrian near SF State on Monday night. Yikes!

In Muni funding news, we learned that SF supervisors decided not to put a vehicle-licensing fee that would bring in money for Muni on the November ballot. And KQED reported that, according to union leaders, the odds are stacked against transit operators in talks. CBS Bay Area notes that the clock is ticking on those same talks. The Examiner weighed in on Why Muni can’t find good drivers.

We learned that SFMTA launched “Google Bus” pilot program map, and promised increased enforcement. And Streetsblog SF asked whether SFMTA’s proposed shuttle stops are enough to end Muni conflicts.

In BART news, we breathed a sigh of relief to learn that the huge, dirty rope sculpture at the Embarcadero BART station is going to be removed. The Giants and Warriors are contributing to a capacity study at BART’s Embarcadero and Montgomery stations. And finally, SFGate reports that rides on BART’s Oakland Airport Connector will set you back $6.

Muni buses-turned-showers for homeless ready to roll out

Remember the story about the buses that would be turned into giant showers for homeless people? No?

Well, it’s happening, you guys. SFist has the details:

Lava Mae, the San Francisco startup that has converted a Muni bus into showers for the homeless, is ready to roll out their first mobile washroom in the Mission starting on June 28 … For the first phase, Lava Mae’s shower bus will work with the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center and will be parked on Capp Street between 16th and 17th Street from 7 a.m. until noon. The converted bus currently has two private “hygiene pods” (read: bathrooms) that include a shower, sink, toilet and a changing room. To keep things moving, users must sign up ahead of time to schedule their timed, 10-minute showers.”

We’re glad to see these out-of-commish buses being used for something other than landfill. (Though sometimes that can be purty.)

What are some other potential uses for decommissioned Muni buses you can think of?
