Court orders work on Muni’s Mission Bay Loop stopped

MBL_stopped

Last month, we told you about residents’ efforts to stop SFMTA from constructing a streetcar “loop” in Dogpatch. Muni wants the loop so that it would be able to turn southbound T-Third trains around. The efforts involved a protest on Feb. 12 near the site of the proposed loop.

SFGate reports that yesterday, a state court ordered construction, already under way, stopped.

The work was scheduled to be completed in October. But the First District Court of Appeal issued a stay Tuesday of any orders for demolition, excavation or construction while it considers the case, and scheduled written arguments through March 27.

The lawsuit by a group of residents and business owners contends the city’s 15-year-old environmental assessment has become obsolete because of an influx of apartments, condominiums and stores in the neighborhood.

Muni rider and Bayview resident Carol agrees that the assessment is no longer relevant. “I think another impact study needs to be done, because (back then) the future of SF’s southeast still seemed like there would be growth, but I don’t think anyone could have guessed how the area has changed. Speaking not only to the impact of traffic and congestion, but even more so of the accessibility for the city’s most southeastern neighborhoods. Bayview and Sunnydale are huge neighborhoods, yet they have the worst transit options. From what I’ve seen of the plans, any of the future changes are only going to create further slowing of and a decrease in service. Even if the loop is moved further south, to the yard at 23rd Street and Third, it will cause issues for everyone, but mostly Muni commuters south of it.”

A thrilling (but totally un-recommended) way to ride Muni

j riders by ikleytman

Yes, the Muni fare has hiked up to $2.25, but is it really worth it to hitch a ride this way, or am I just engaging in old-person-talk? Wait, don’t answer that. Below are two more thrillseekers we’ve posted in the past, but totally worth revisiting.

New map plots hotels to BART stations for transit-minded visitors

hotels near bart

A new map plots hotels by price next to BART stations to help out-of-towners take advantage of our oh-so-colorful public transit system during their visit. The creator of the map, Jeff Howard, says that it isn’t so easy to find out all the information you need near a public transit system, so he’s created a few of these maps for some metropolitan cities for transit-minded travelers. You can peek a larger version of the map on his website.

Howard has also created maps for cities including Hotels Near DC metro, NJ Hotels Near NYC, and Hotels Outside Boston. So now you know where to stay should your travels take you to DC, New York, Boston or Dublin … California.

P.S. For a fantasy trip, we recommend that Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road BART map. Power up.

Muni: Where the rubber meets the … back door

condom

Safety first, people, especially when it fits the color palette this well. Thankfully, this one was still in its wrapper and, say, not a discarded magnum draped over the railing. Not that that ever happened or anything.

Hat tip to Muni rider Karen for this, adding, “It’s always a party on the 5L.” If I knew it was that kind of party, I would’ve added my box of Franzia to the mix and put those cable-car booze buses to shame.

A Muni moral quandary: Nail polish vs. BBQ cancer?

bbq_cancer

All the important issues of the day get their time under the glow of lights on Muni. All of them.

Muni rider Laura filled us in on the latest over on the Muni Diaries Facebook page:

“The setting: the 48 Quintara headed for Noe Valley. A passenger whips out her nail polish and begins a manicure next to my mom, who is deathly allergic to the stuff. Mom asks her, politely, to stop. The passenger ignores Mom and finishes her nails. But wait, there’s more: the driver, who is going off shift, strikes up a conversation with Ms. Manicure: he’s going to spend his vacay barbecuing red meat. The divine Ms. M goes off: BBQ is carcinogenic, she says. I ask you, gentle reader: what is more harmful, a BBQ or an aerosolized cocktail of formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP)? Just sayin’…”

You know the saying: It takes all types.
