Nighttime Muni underground service will return soon

muni underground

Remember all those times when you tried to walk into an underground Muni station after a night of drinking, only to be reminded that there hasn’t been nighttime underground service since last July? Well, you soon won’t have to suffer that indignity any more, the SFMTA says.

For nearly six months, the underground service has closed nightly 9:30 p.m. to allow for the replacement of the Blue Light Emergency Telephone and Radio System. Surface bus shuttles have substituted for your beloved J, K, L, M, N, and T lines. The construction project is set to be completed on January 22, so you can go back to your underground transit-riding ways.

New BART signs: Easier to read, kinda ’80s-looking

new bart font

BART’s new signage started popping up at Civic Center Station a couple of weeks ago. Have you seen it? The new signs larger and easier to read, but the font looks a little ’80s to typography geeks. Do you agree?

In the photo above from BART.gov, the sign on the top is the old version which is still in use in many stations. The font on the new sign, below its predecessor, is a slightly different color and larger—actually, 38 percent larger than the old signs, according to BART.

BART also says the old signs were installed in 2000 and the bulbs were starting to break, and that the new signs have a higher resolution and higher contrast. In the next three to four months, BART will add the new signage to Powell, Montgomery, and Embarcadero Stations.

Wanna take that Segway or hoverboard on BART? Get a permit!

The kids, they are brazen. Good thing BART knows this. The transit agency has instituted a new permit program for passengers who intend to bring their moving toys on the train. Per BART.gov:

BART has a policy governing the use of Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (EPAMDs) within the system.  The policy covers all battery-powered, self-balancing, two-wheeled transporters, including the Segway Personal Transporter.

You must apply for and receive a permit in order to bring an EPAMD on BART. To apply for a permit, read the policy governing EPAMDs (.pdf), download the application for a general permit (.pdf) or a permit for persons with disabilities (.pdf) and follow the application instructions.

So, now you know what to do.

Muni buses catch fire; hundreds more taken offline, inspected

muni_bus_fires

In separate incidents last week, two Muni trolley buses caught on fire, prompting the agency to pull 298 buses into yards for inspection.

SFMTA’s Director of Transit Operations, John Haley, spoke to the SF Examiner:

“The connector of the pole is what burned through,” he said. Haley had a burned connector pole in his pocket, just to help recount what went wrong on the bus to anyone who may need an explanation.

Haley pulled 298 buses into “divisions” (what SFMTA calls its repair yards) for inspection. The buses which caught fire, he said, were nearly 15 years old, and are a similar configuration to many buses in the Muni fleet.

The inspections “found about 45 buses in need of repair.” SFMTA made necessary repairs so as to impact commutes as little as possible. A longer-term solution hasn’t been announced. “These coaches are ready to be replaced,” [Haley] said, “but given the delivery schedule (of new buses), most will remain in service for another two years.”
