Weekend Photos: Look both ways

Photo by Flickr user Rick Audet

What a wacky week it was for Muni. How’s that different from any other week on Muni? you ask. Here’s how:
– J-Church derails near Dolores Park; no injuries (Muni Diaries)
– 21-Hayes snarled by fallen tree between Steiner and Fillmore (Examiner)
– The F-Market/Wharves: No Tourist Trap (Los Angeles Times)
– Out-of-control, overturned car hits 6-Parnassus on Market Street (SF Appeal)
– Sup. Chiu prepares to reject MTA budget, service cuts (SF Appeal)
– Window-covering ad deal approved for Muni vehicles (Examiner)
– Fare-evasion down on Muni (Streetsblog SF)
– Supervisors, operators, riders call for rejection of MTA budget (Streetsblog SF)

Here at Muni Diaries, we were delighted to help Greg tell the story of Tammy, a lovely 33-Stanyan driver who’s being moved to the 24-Divisadero. Tammy decorated her bus this week, and gave candy to her passengers. Kinda utterly amazing, huh? Thanks, Tammy!

And lastly, sadly, please don’t forget the systemwide Muni service cuts going into effect tomorrow. SFMTA has an explanation of the changes, and 511 and Google are your best bets for actual schedules and predictions.

Have a great weekend! And check back here Monday for more great Muni stories from your fellow riders.

Flipped SUV Hits 6-Parnassus (update w/photos)

Photos by Spots Unknown

Update (1:35 p.m.): Spots Unknown’s post on the accident is here.

Update (1:32 p.m.): SF Appeal has an update from MTA:

An SF MTA spokesperson tells us that preliminary reports say that a Jeep-type SUV hit the island (the cement place where you wait for the bus, yikes), rolled over and hit the Operator side of the bus. As of yet, no injuries have been reported.

Original post: SF Appeal has the goods.

We’ve received a report from Appeal staffer Katie Doze, who says that a 6 Parnassus Muni bus has collided with an SUV on Market at Montgomery, causing it to overturn. “It does not appear that any other car was involved” says Doze, who happened on the scene moments after it happened.

She says that the accident is blocking northbound buses, so if you’re in the area, prepare for bad traffic.

We’ll do our best to update. Or you can check in with SF Appeal.

J-Church derails between 20th and 22nd Sts (w/updates)

Update (10:54 a.m., Sunday): I guess SFMTA (5:09 p.m.) and KTVU (5:43 p.m.) don’t have Muni Diaries in their RSS feeds. Wait, do those folks have RSS feeds?

Update (4:38 p.m.): Shuttles are available between 16th and 30th Streets. (511)

Original post: Suzanne sent us the photos (above and below), and had this to say:

I waited on Market Street from 1:55 until 2:35 for the J Church to arrive to go to Bernal Heights. Then, just past 20th Street, past the park, in that narrow rail road channel the train derailed. It was a two car train packed with people and old people. The driver waited about 3 minutes without any communication then just told people to get off the train. There was nowere to go in that narrow passage way. Some people walked down, others walked up. Another muni train came up behind and it told people to get off the tracks and to walk away because it was a dangerous place to be. So people walked two blocks up the passage way.

There’s no word from MTA about this incident. We’ll do our best to keep you posted.

More photos after the jump.

Woman waiting for bus injured at 21-Hayes stop (w/update)

Update (7:31 a.m., Thursday): The Examiner has more — a driver was already fleeing a hit-and-run with another vehicle. The woman at the shelter sustained broken bones, but her injuries aren’t life-threatening. From The Examiner:

The suspect, a 35-year-old man, rear-ended a vehicle while headed westbound on Hayes Street near Baker Street at 6:40 p.m., Lt. Liam Frost said.

Fleeing the collision, the driver threw his Ford truck into reverse, but ended up jumping the curb going backward, striking a woman and taking out the bus stop, Frost said.

The woman, said to be in her late 30s, sustained broken bones, but her injuries were not life-threatening, he said

Original post: This report comes via @theSusyness:

I saw the photo on facebook. The bus stop was plowed into by a car, a woman was sitting in the bus shelter waiting for the 21 bus. I’m hearing that the driver has fled, believed hit & run. Originally I was told the pedestrian was killed, but now I am hearing the woman is alive. It happened today, just an hour or two ago.

We’ll update this post when/if we learn more. We really hope the victim is okay.

Hella Hot Again at Muni Diaries Live

More than 100 of you spent Friday night with us, doubling over laughing at BART driver Kelly Beardsley’s impersonation of a hapless German tourist and singing along to McPuzo and Trotsky’s 38 Geary song. For those of you who didn’t make it to the hot Make-Out Room that night (or couldn’t make it in due to capacity reasons – our apologies), let me give you a little taste of the ridiculously fun night.

Our favorite burlesque cheerleading squad, The Cock-Ts, kicked off our third spoken word party at the Make-Out Room with Muni cheers written especially for us. Their misguided counselor, Coach Chester, had a few faux-‘stache malfunctions, but that didn’t faze varsity cheerleaders EZ-Martini, Dizzy Disaster, and Lil Biscuit.

Update: (9:41 p.m.): Twitter follower justinberton sends the photo above. joem sends the photo below, of the back-up scene on Market Street.

Original post: A pedestrian on the tracks at the Castro station was apparently killed by a Muni train this afternoon, the SFAppeal reports:

SFFD Spokesperson Lt. Mindy Talmadge confirms to the Appeal that the fire department was called to Castro Station at 4:40 this afternoon, after a pedestrian on the tracks was apparently hit by a Muni train.

“We’re not sure how he got on the tracks” Talmadge said “we attempted to revive him and when it was evident that he had expired, we called the Medical Examiner.”

Some riders reported being stuck in the trains for 40 minutes or more, according to the report (see more updates from the SFAppeal).

KCBS also reports the fatality.
