Say Hello to Muni Diaries’ New Look!

You might have noticed that Muni Diaries is sporting a spiffier look today. Things are tidier, prettier, and easier to find. Our number one goal is to make Muni Diaries the best place for you to share and read stories about life in transit in San Francisco. We hope you like it!

Our graphic designer for the new look is Craig Fowler, who patiently worked with us to maintain and enhance the overall feel of the site. Our web developer is Zoe Rooney, who turned Craig’s vision into reality and added back-end capabilities that will make our lives 100 times easier.

Every day we are amazed at the stories and photos that you share with your fellow riders. Thanks to everyone who has helped to make this community possible, and please share your feedback about the redesign or anything else with us!

Muni honors driver, defender of torched bus

Photo by Lea Suzuki, The Chronicle / SF

Turns out good deeds don’t always go unnoticed. For their efforts after the Giants’ World Series victory, the SFMTA honored Alan Yam, driver of the bus that was eventually burned, and Simon Timony, he of the Muni Defense Brigade™.

SFGate has the story of Yam, a Muni bus driver who helped usher his passengers off his vehicle once the danger became apparent.

And the SF Examiner covers Timony, whom the SFMTA board offered free Muni for life. Simon did the right thing, politely declining such a prize.

Police Arrest Second Suspect in Muni Arson

The San Francisco Police Department arrested a second suspect in connection to the bus arson that happened on Oct. 29. According to the SFPD report:

Inspectors from the Department’s Special Investigations Division, which includes the Arson Task Force, arrested Nicholas Hudson, 19, of Daly City. He was arrested in South San Francisco at 10:15 A.M. and was later booked into San Francisco County Jail.

Hudson has been charged with vandalism, damaging or destroying a passenger transit vehicle, arson (all felonies), and a probation violation. Police credit the input and assistance from the public helping to identify Hudson.

The vandalism of Muni buses was clearly upsetting to many regular riders like you, judging from the submissions that flooded our inbox the day after the World Series game, including this disturbing video of rioters lighting the bus on fire. People were plenty upset in Twittersphere too:

Oh by the way, @PKittyTrisha asked if the driver was ok in the arson. He is, and was in fact honored for heroism.

The police are still looking for help identifying other suspects in the vandalism (photos on the SFPD news site)

If you have a tip regarding the vandalism, the SFPD is asking people to call the SFPD Special Investigations Division/Arson Task Force at (415) 920-2944, the Anonymous Tip Line (415) 575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text with SFPD.

Clipper Card Reader Tagged the Wrong Time?

Have you gotten a ticket because the Clipper card reader tagged the wrong time? One of our readers said this happened to him, and he wasn’t able to fight the fine. Read Sean R.’s account.

A few weeks ago my wife and a friend of ours boarded Muni at about 5:45 p.m. in the Inner Sunset. When they got off at Civic Center a little after 6 p.m., they were stopped by fare inspectors who scanned their Clipper cards. It was then that they were told the system registered them having boarded at 4 p.m., and that they’d be issued a ticket for riding with an expired fare.

Their well-documented petition was denied, and to even fight it they have to pay the $103 fine.

If this has happened to you, were you able to petition the ticket? Let us know what happened.
