Groped on Muni in the Morning

Reader “A.F.” (real name withheld) sent us this disturbing account of being groped on Muni.

This morning, I was zoning out on the N train, when I realized that the guy in front of me was groping my crotch. His fingers were moving up and down in a way that didn’t seem accidental (though it might have been, I’m still not entirely sure, as it was a crowded train). I blurted out: “you just groped me.” Reaction? Complete silence, from him, and from the rest of the train. He got out at the next stop.

There are plenty of articles and unofficial polls about how frequently this happens. There’s no way to prove it, but I wanted to say or do something. Does anyone know if there are any official statistics collected on this issue? I was surprised that Muni’s website had no information on this topic.

What would you do? Or if you were on the train, watching?

The Bay Citizen reported earlier this year that sexual assault on public transportation is vastly under-reported. And sadly, A.F.’s account is one of many reports that we’ve received from readers about being groped on public transit.

Would you report this to the police if it happened to you? What do you think bystanders should do?

Time Lapse Video: One Day In San Francisco’s Public Transit

We love transit geeks, especially ones who are handy with time-lapse videos. Via SFist, we found YouTube user STLTransit, who created time-lapse videos of public transit systems, including one of San Francisco that shows the movement of every Muni bus, BART train, and ferry boat over a period of 24 hours.

I just can’t stop watching the littler dots of buses buzzing by, and the color-coordinated dots for BART lines whizzing through the East Bay.

Must. Click. Play. Again.

Thanks, SFist.

The good folks at the SFMTA Photo Archive are still busy opening up the vaults. To honor Muni’s centennial, the archives have made available 57 posters with amazing historic photos. Check them out here.

Just to whet your appetite, the caption on the photo above reads: “Trolley Coaches Outside of Seals Baseball Stadium at 16th & Bryant Sts; SF Giants vs. Philadelphia | April 29, 1958”

Jaw, drop.

(unfunded) BART to the future!

Holy transit nerd heaven!

Via SFist, we learned today about the latest, greatest BART plan for the transit system’s future growth. Good news: Along with expected growth in the Bay Area’s population, officials expect a big boost in the use of public transportation. But how to accomodate the expected more than 50 percent growth between now and 2025?

The answer is BART Metro, and here’s what it entails:

  • Instituting express service that would allow trains to zip through less-used stations.
  • Picking up rush-hour passengers every 12 minutes instead of every 15 minutes — and using only 10-car trains (the longest possible).
  • Increasing night, weekend and transbay service.
  • Utilizing 10-car trains that would split into a pair of five-car trains to take passengers in different directions at the Bay Fair station south of Oakland.

Anyone who has visited New York City knows the beauty of express trains. The only problem here: No one knows how to pay for these enhancements.

This Friday: Muni Photography Opening Party!

Come party with us this Friday to celebrate the amazing photographers you’ve seen on Muni Diaries! We’ve partnered up with the wonderful Harvey Milk Photo Center for a photo exhibit called “In Transit.”

In celebration of Muni’s centennial, this exhibit will feature gorgeous San Francisco photos that you’ve previously probably only seen on your computer screen. The opening reception this Friday will also feature our new “Rename Your Muni Line” game where you can bestow a new nickname for your line (6-Parnasty, anybody?) on a humongous map, pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey style (no blindfolds, unless you’re so inclined).

The Harvey Milk Photo Center is at the west end of Duboce Park, and a great place for photography-lovers. Hello, 40-person dark room? They have it.

See you this Friday!
