Your 2017 Bay to Breakers Costume Inspiration

It is my firm belief that if you’ve lived in San Francisco for
a few years, you probably have a section in your wardrobe dedicated to costumed events, like Bay to Breakers this Sunday. If you are still looking for inspiration, look no further than our public transit system. Our current favorite is the young woman dressed up as “that painfully embarrassing Muni door moment,” above.

And despite drunken partiers, Bay to Breakers is also a quintessential San Francisco event that can change your experience of living here. In this week’s Muni Diaries podcast, storyteller (and Elbo Room sound man) Gabriel Armstrong shares his story of what happened when he carried his broken down B2B vehicle home on Muni, and scaring little kids on the way. Muni bus refuses to be defined by traditional line-naming

Why choose between two Chinatown lines when you could have a little of column A and a little of column B?

Rider @kilodelta reported this head-scratching Muni sign the other day. Is it equal parts 30-Stockton and 45-Union-Stockton? Is that this vehicle’s on-time rating? (At 66%, seems a bit high for a Stockton Street line).

Could this be the bus driver who also tried to pull the Jedi mind trick on a 5-Fulton driver recently?

We’ll take this confusion-inducer over the “Windows has computer” Powell station signage, which was really no help at all.

So you only want to spend $2.50 but also want the alluring cachet of escaping the hoi polloi (gasp)?

Dreams do come true (with a healthy sense of humor and a dash of imagination) on this 7-Haight, the driver of which updated its LED sign in the lower-left corner to say Lyft.

Mannerly must-have for Muni riders: letterpress etiquette cards

Someone found a classy way to complain about a very annoying habit on Muni — those damn backpacks! Direct from the Muni Diaries Instagram inbox, artist Emma Munger sends us her very first letter press project:bus etiquette cards. Emma says:

My first letterpress project is something I can hand out to the dickheads of public transportation #takemycard

No, please, for the love of god, take her card.

Inconsiderate backpack carriers on Muni have been called a lot of names — turtles, for example — in our transit-riding community. You hate having backpacks bumping into you so much that our very first Spanish submission was about this universal pet peeve.

The powers that be assure us that they’re aware. A lot of ink has been spilled about how you should just take the damn thing off on a crowded bus. BART made a PSA about it. It’s the number two complaint from Muni riders (can you guess what numero uno is?). But that has yet to translate into common commute courtesy.

In the post-apocalyptic future, no Muni shelter is safe. This photo came from the blog run by Jamie Zawinski, proprietor of DNA Lounge, who says: “Every quality dystopia has a touch of neon.”

You might know the DNA Lounge as the all ages dance club (home of classic club nights like Bootie, Hubba Hubba Revue, and Deathguild), or hilarious quirky events like Mortified and Hoodslam. The word on the street is that this San Francisco institution is looking for funding support to keep it independent.

Post-It artist brilliantly illustrates Hamilton on BART

Bay Area creativity and our collective Hamilton craze were fiercely represented in a Post-It note artist’s work on BART.

As seen by @andylie1 on Twitter, someone brought brilliant cultural cachet to the fine station and city of Lafayette with some well-placed Post-It notes on this BART map. For those of you not (yet) in the Hamilton crew, Marquis de Lafayette is a character in the musical portrayed by Daveed Diggs. Here’s the video to said lyrics, and consider this your Broadway earworm of the day.

As if this is not cool enough: Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda full-on quoted the tweet for his million-plus following and gave it a big ole double tap regram on Insta. Dear Post-It artist, I think your whole life has been made.
