Weekend Photo Diary: Muni Metro Goes A-Whizzin’ By

Photo by Rick Audet from the Muni Photos Flickr pool

Found this photo in our Flickr account the other day. It touches off all sorts of geek nerves in me — from the suggestion of speed and motion to the wide-angle aspect and blurring of imagery. Great photo by Rick.

Well, nothing much going on this weekend. Ah, we kid. Hell, the weekend seemed to start early for most of you (not us!), so you’re probably reading this Sunday or Monday. Hope you enjoyed it.

If you’re still looking for things to do Saturday, the day the country we live in was born, look no further — SF Appeal has a great round-up.

Weather in the city should be mild by July standards. Go forth … on the fourth. [the sound of fellow Muni Diaries editors beating Jeff]

Muni Diaries

Horse phooey!

The following words and image came to our gmail from vivian:

The city of SF and muni continues to amaze me. Besides having to endure the always “colorful” 47/49 on my commute to & from work, I now have the pleasure of walking past huge piles of crap next to the stop @ North Point. For TWO days now this lovely pile has been sitting here hanging out greeting tourists as the make their way over to Ghiradelli [sic] Square. Are there wild horses roaming around that I don’t know about?

It’s amazing that tourists still visit our city given how we don’t really give a crap about keeping it nice and clean for them. I guess we natives can just pass along stories to you muni diaries to share in the pain and misery. 🙂

WTF Is This? Mini-Fridge?

minifridge

Heh. Maybe this can become a regular Muni Diaries feature. Tara sent us this photo from the 10 stop at Stockton and North Point … along with this penetrating question:

Is it wrong to kind of wish the mini fridge was still in this box? It’s AC/DC powerd AND can do hot, also.

Are your editors simply out of the consumerist loop? WTF is a mini-fridge, any-freakin’-way?

Send your WTFs and other poignant observations of life on Muni to us!

Driver Smoke Breaks

The following came to us from Matt Baume, the man behind the Muni Alerts Twitter account, among other things he’s spearheaded.

I took this photo at the end of the 41 and 45 lines, where drivers take breaks after a run. One driver is smoking. She doesn’t have a driver number on her uniform.

This raises a tough question. Smoking at transit stops is illegal in SF — Muni maps spell out the exact code that prohibits it — but what are drivers supposed to do if they’re addicted to nicotine? Where are they supposed to go to smoke on their break?

This lady seemed like a nice person but her smoke was stinking up the whole bus stop. I don’t know what the solution is, aside from firing smokers. I guess you could argue that smokers are unfit to drive buses, since they’ve chosen a habit that adversely affects their ability to do their job legally. But that also seems pretty harsh.
