This weekend provides plenty of opportunities for all manners of geekery. Go ahead and geek out on books, transit, and other fun stuff. And don’t forget, Muni Diaries lives on your stories from public transit. Help us document a slice of life in San Francisco and feed our inbox.

Three things to do this weekend:

Saturday, Dec. 3, 12-6 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Concourse Exhibition Center East Hall. 620 Seventh St. (at Brannan). Take Muni there: 10, 12, 19, 27, or 47
  • Muni Centennial book signing. the authors of San Francisco Municipal Railway (that’s Muni) will be at the San Francisco Railway Museum to sign books and answer questions about our storied transit system. Santa gets started on Muni

Yes, he was spotted on BART in October. But that was merely a decoy used to get us talking. Sneaky devil.

Now it’s December, and Saint Nick is for reals. And he’s so chill about it, he’s taking Muni to creep into your non-existent fireplace and deliver presents. Or not? Spotted by no less than two (count ’em, 2!!!!) Muni riders.

If you see the jolly red dude, gawk for sure. But then share you stories and photos!

Mx. Fix-It Saves the 12-Folsom (and Happy Hour)

100 Muni Stories

Blair stepped up and fixed the bus. No, you guys, they fixed the bus, saving happy hour and some 12-Folsom riders’ sanity.

Rider Blair teased us over on our Facebook Page with “I fixed the 12-Folsom tonight, where’s my cookie?” Well, here’s why I’m getting Blair cookies. Further proof that you should never, ever get between someone and their beer.

The handicapped ramp was stuck on the ground after someone had used it at the 14th and Folsom stop (FoodSlow) and the driver just sat there and called it in, instead of trying to fix it. I finally got up after 10 mins and said ‘did you try to fiddle with it or just stare at it’; he grunted he did not try to fix it. I went outside and looked it over and asked him a few questions, kicked and tugged. He FINALLY tried the button, nothing, I said wait, kicked and pulled again and sure enough…it moved back into place. Everyone was very happy that they did not have to wait for the next 12 (40 mins) and I told the bus driver to try and fix things himself next time. My GF called me out knowing I was headed to meet her and friends for happy hour and that stupid ramp was between me and beer.

We all know that Muni needs a lot of fixing. Have you ever pitched in? Like really fixed it? If so, you might get cookies, too. Spin us a yarn at muni.diaries.sf@gmail.com.

Decorating Muni Streetcars for the Holidays

Last Saturday, Tara and I joined folks from Market Street Railway in what has become an annual tradition: The hanging of wreaths, streamers, and garlands on the historic F-Market/Wharves streetcars.

Here are a few of our behind-the-scenes shots. Look for car 1818 (already a green-and-red livery) on the streets in all its holiday glory soon!
