The Uneventful Muni Ride

100 Muni StoriesThis tweet made me think of public transit planners, the people who ostensibly want a system of vehicles going from various Points A to B without much happening in between. Yeah, right.

@PickUpABook: Nothing eventful happened on my commute today. With muni, sometimes that’s the best you can hope for

We hear you. Although there are some experiences we hope for.

For the next few months, Muni Diaries is presenting 100 Days, 100 Muni Stories, our way of celebrating Muni’s centennial year. Send us your contribution, or tag your tweets #100MuniStories.

Burrito Justice: Loop the T-Third

Our pal over at Burrito Justice has a “modest proposal” when it comes to the construction of the Central Subway:

Unless we see a change in the SFMTA’s attitude, we are left with no choice but to hijack the tunnel boring machine as it exits its tunnel at Columbus and Union and continue boring tunnels.

Simply catching sight of the tunnel-boring machine that will soon bore its way under Fourth Street set Mr. Justice’s synapses a-firin’. He lays his plan out in excruciating detail, then asks for a show of hands.

Our hands are in the air, sir. Enthusiastically.

Read the whole proposal at Burrito Justice.

Weekend Photos: Behind the Scenes

This week I happened upon lots of great photos of Muni in its off time, including one from Mike Dillon, who captured this photo of the crew last weekend. He said, “Late night Saturday in Cole Valley, the crew works through the night to get the N-Judah back up and running. Oh, how I’ve missed wandering the streets at night.”

Take a look at what happens when the riders are not looking. So glad these photographers always have their lenses at the ready. Enjoy these photos and your weekend!

Ready-for-Primetime Muni Driver Sings the Connecting Lines

Photo: The Holy Hand Grenade

100 Muni StoriesA Broadway-ready Muni driver gets creative with the announcements:

@bhautikj: The driver on the 27-Bryant is theatrically singing the names of connecting lines. Awesome!

Is it the same singing Muni driver from last year? When he’s bigtime famous, we can say we knew him when.

Heard or experienced something quintessentially Muni? A centennial-worthy tale, perhaps? Send us your story via the Muni Diaries submission form or tweet @munidiaries with hashtag #100MuniStories. Read the rest of our 100 Days, 100 Muni Stories entries for inspiration.

Muni Theft Thwarted, Name-Calling Ensues

100 Muni StoriesA thief scorned and a bitch praised:

@xxriabellaxx: A woman prevented a theft on 38L this morn. Thief called her a bitch b4 exiting. Bitch > thief. #100MuniStories

We in the Bay Area call that moted (alternately, moded).

There is still plenty of theft on Muni buses, but we’re proud to say that Muni riders have a way of helping one another out. In January, for example, Rachel thwarted an iPhone theft on this very same line.

You, too, could be featured in our 100 Days, 100 Muni Stories drive. Celebrate 100 years of Muni by telling us your story today. Email works or tweet to @munidiaries, hashtag #100MuniStories.
