If I had to guess, I’d say that Muni riders are pretty evenly split on whether to hide themselves away from fellow passengers. We don’t so much do the 100-yard stare as just immerse ourselves in music, podcasts, reading, porn, whatever. About half of us do, anyway. 48-52, if I had to guess.

How do you ride Muni?

Ding-da-ding-ding: Cable Car Bell-Ringing Contest Thursday (update)

Update (Friday, 7:45 a.m.): SFGate has the results: Reigning champ Leonard Oats lost in a tie-breaker to Trini Whittaker. Congrats!

Original: Today in Union Square, Muni will host the 49th annual Cable Car Bell-Ringing Contest. The pro-am competition will take place at noon.

Cable car gripmen and conductors “will face-off for the chance to take home the title of World Champion Cable Car Bell Ringer. Defending champion Leonard Oats will compete against six challengers. The 2012 bell ringing finalists are Charles Mondy, Ken Lunardi, Romarr Pitcher, Trini Whittaker, Singh B. Rai and Jorge Lacayo.” Also, Romarr Pitcher could’ve been the baddest-ass baseball player ever if the cable car gig didn’t work out.

Ding-ding!

Muni Route Nicknames

The other day over drinks, my friend Blair told me all about her beloved/behated “Phantom Folsom” (the 12-Folsom). I hadn’t heard that one before, probably because I rarely ride that route.

But it got me thinking: Besides the infamous “Dirty 30,” what are some other good Muni nicknames?

Muni Home Décor Project

Muni rider Jon moved here a few months ago, and fell right into lockstep with the rest of us.

I’ve already fallen right into place with my love/hate relationship with Muni. I’m not usually crafty or artsy, but the rooms of my walls were just big blank canvases on which to put something up. So, I went out and got some colored ribbons, thumbtacks, a Diana Mini camera, some film, and a measuring tape. It’s still a work in progress, but this is my bedroom wall as of now.

And some people say we are obsessed with public transportation.

Here is Jon’s BART wallmap:
