We recently heard from Ken Maley, who helped organize the Muni Metro party we posted about in the summer of 2011. Here’s what Ken had to say about the planning and preparation for that party, which we’re bummed to have missed (hey! We were kids at that time, too!)
The late Jim Rivaldo, Dick Pabich, and I had lobbied Muni in 1979 to name the Castro Station after Harvey Milk. Harvey was a big supporter of Muni/public transportation. Muni told us stations weren’t named after people, but did agree to our alternative suggestion, which was the Harvey Milk Plaza and an event in the new stations.
A Harvey Milk Fund had been set up and when I learned that the Muni Metro was set to open in May/June 1980, I had the idea of having a party in the Castro station as a benefit for the MIlk Fund. Muni was very cooperative, and when they took me into the station, I realized that it would be too expensive–and unrealistic given that the system was to open the next morning after the event, to install a cover over the rails between the IN and OUTBOUND platforms. One of the Muni staff said I should use a station that had a center loading platform and the first one up the line was Van Ness station.

The subway was backed up yesterday afternoon so I had to take an above ground bus from Civic Center to the Financial District. Taking the above ground is something that I usually hate having to do because it takes forever. I hopped on the first bus to come along, which was an F Market.
A group of teenage girls who boarded at 5th Street started singing in the back. The bus driver got on the intercom and asked if they’d maybe sing some Christmas carols instead, which they gladly did. The next thing you know, the driver has joined in over the intercom and then suddenly, there was an entire F Market streetcar singing Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
The holidays might be over but there was certainly enough cheer left to spare today.

Okay, yeah, bombs on public transit are not a joking matter. So this artist took matters into their own hands, and reclaimed this bright-green symbol for the cute-lovers among us.

So, the San Francisco Giants baseball team won the top prize in professional baseball in the year that ends today. What’s that got to do with Muni? Clearly, you just came out of your coma, so we’ll go easy on you.
The most-viewed post of 2012 on Muni Diaries was “Giants Win World Series! SF Trashes Muni!”. Of course it was. I mean, what else happened this year? Fer srs.
Of course, it wasn’t the baseball game itself, nor the players or fans, who got the most pageviews on this site. It was, sadly, the wanton destruction of a Muni bus, and the story of one guy who tried to stop the madness.

Muni rider David (@dleesf) sent in this photo titled, “Christmas kitty on the F train.” Now, I know this cat is not wearing a Christmas ornament or anything, but I can be convinced that cats are the new Christmas, and therefore David’s caption is perfectly reasonable.
