We know Muni inspires some pretty damn good haikus, but we didn’t expect these haikus to be used as bargaining chips on the bus! Muni rider Lisa M. tried to trade her haiku for a ride on the 28, and the Muni operator said no (and rightly so). But another rider, “Larry the football fan,” was charmed enough by Lisa’s impromptu ingenuity that he paid her fare for her. And here’s a photo of her ride-winning haiku, worth at least $2.25.
Artist Dan Bransfield created this adorable animated short about why umbrellas are terrible: they poke you in the eye, drip water on your shoes, and always seem to get left behind. Muni even makes a cameo in the animated short film about why umbrellas are especially terrible on the bus. Dan also shows off his own rain-proof solution.
By the way, Dan makes another amusing print about San Francisco’s ever-so-fickle weather. Will somebody get me this print and a waterproof hoodie, please?

Kindness has this thing it does where you’re walking around all pissed-off, jaded, or both. Then it whacks you over the head and confuses the hell out of you.
And some of these even involve awesome Muni drivers!

This is pretty much the most San Francisco illustration ever. We’ve got Laughing Sal from the Musée Mécanique, Doggie Diner doghead, Piedmont Boutique stockinged legs, Green Apple Books guy, and Lou Seal. To top it all off, they’re all riding Muni together. Thanks to @danbransfield on Instagram for posting this!

Camaraderie among Muni passengers really brings out some of the most surprising moments of kindness. Muni rider Zann sent us this “Only on Muni” story via Facebook.
This was on an inbound 24, as we crossed over Cortland:
This young guy gets on the 24, totally reeking of pot. He sits and opens his hand and has a handful of loose buds and shake. He pulls out a dollar and tries to wrap the weed in it, when this old lady next to him says, “Honey, you’re gonna spill that all over. Take this.” She pulls a handkerchief out of her purse and holds it open for him while he dumps the handful into it, then folds it up nicely and hands it to him. He offers her a piece as a thank you, and she refuses it. “No thanks, Honey, I don’t touch the stuff.”
It really was a magical “only in SF” moment, and a totally unashamed and candid interaction between them.
I always knew there was a reason I love people who carry handkerchiefs!
