NYC Subway shark lives life hard

Living in a big city, you come into contact with plenty of people you might describe as sharks. But you don’t exactly expect to see the real thing on a subway.

That’s exactly what happened in New York City earlier this week when subway riders found a small shark left upside down beneath a seat. Later in the day, photos of the shark surfaced  on Gothamist, upright, and posing with a transit pass, Red Bull, and cigarette.

We don’t expect to see any sharks on Bay Area transit anytime soon, but it made us wonder: Does this trump a live chicken on Muni?

Just in time for Shark Week, too.

The Atlantic Ocean: Giant Transit Trash Can

Ever wonder what happens when old subway cars die? Many of New York’s end up in a watery grave.

Unbelievably, for more than 10 years the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority has been dumping its old cars into the Atlantic Ocean to create artificial reefs for ocean life. Some sit off the coast of Delaware. New Jersey, according to an Aug. 22, 2001, New York Times article, rejected the idea because of concerns about asbestos within the walls of the cars.

Photographer Stephen Mallon spent more two years taking some pretty spectacular photos of the subway car dumping, like the one above. You can see more here.

And take a moment to imagine BART cars being dumped into the Bay …

Chilean NSFW Bus Video: Is This the XXX Line?

Ed. note: In case you missed it in the headline, watch the video above at your own discretion. NSFW and all that.

In what has to be one of the more embarrassing on-the-job goofs, in late January a bus driver in Chile inadvertently aired a porn movie on the onboard video screens on his bus. A 40-second clip of the blunder, complete with some pretty amusing background laughter from passengers of the Santiago to Talagante-bound bus, has since gone viral.

Hmm, we’ve ridden some pretty dirty buses in our time. But not that kind of dirty.

The NYC Subway, a Horrible Place for Bad Ideas

Had it with the transit poop talk? Well, we’re not quite there yet. Definitely not, if there’s a strange utterly mind-boggling story involved.

According to Gawker, a New York man was killed last month after he fell onto the tracks while trying to create a makeshift toilet between two cars of a moving subway.

The story gets ever weirder. Shortly before that, another man was found in the same station, bloodied, with “severe buttocks injuries” and a broken pelvis. Police believe he had climbed up from the tracks and although it was unclear what exactly happened to him. He was, most certainly, very drunk.

Chicago Transit: One disgusting slap in the face

So, you think you have a nasty commute? Last month, a transit rider in Chicago called police after a fellow passenger smacked her across the face with a sock full of poop. Screaming and covered in feces, the woman chased after her attacker, but he ended up escaping.

The woman told the Post-Tribune that the attack occurred without warning and described it as the “biggest degradation” she’d ever experienced, so bad that she would have preferred he’d hit her instead.

Video: Antwerp Rail Travelers Channel Their Inner Bond

Coke Zero (you know, the man’s diet drink?) put together this pretty ingenious promotion in conjunction with the release of the new James Bond movie, Skyfall. Travelers at an Atwerp train station were given the chance to be 007 and had 70 seconds to get to a designated platform and win movie tickets. Sounds easy, right? Well, not quite.

Some of the obstacles the amateur Bonds encounter:

  • workers moving a large sheet of glass
  • a toppled cart of oranges
  • escalator-hogging joggers
  • a crazy lady in a red dress

The video is quite funny but it begs the question … Could a contest like this ever be held here?
