Polite, Proud Balloon Creature on Muni Metro

*whispers intently*

Behold: a purple balloon monster in its natural habitat: among Uggs and vaguely interested Metro passengers.

As spotted by stuffjosefinawrites on Tumblr, this unique balloon creature joins an esteemed cadre of balloon animals on Muni, usually much more buttoned up and tethered than our wily friend here. Muni Diaries editor Eugenia says she spotted it as part of the Pride parade; like a good reveler, it responsibly took public transit home and kept its hands to itself. Kind of.

Muni Adbusters Redux: Gap Is Lucky No. 7

Just when we thought it was safe to, once again, be bored silly by bus ads, the Muni adbusters have returned. I think this is the seventh installment.

Rider Jeff sent us the pic, saying he saw this Gap spoof on a 1-California on Monday. How many of Jeff’s fellow riders just left Gap with bags of new underwear, we wonder?

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, these so-called Muni adbusters were spoofing popular ads and local businesses back in May. The effort has been lambasted by some for its 12-year-old-boy humor, but with faux brand names like Cum Tums and Fartine, I have no idea why. None at all.

More Muni adbusting here.

Gettin’ Around: A Muni-Themed Photo Workshop by Lomography SF

Photo: sixsixty

Back in the old days, we didn’t have Instagram and the Hefe filter to jazz up our photos! We shot with film and we loved it, god dammit!

Anyway, we thought it was about time we paid homage to the old-school way of shooting one of the world’s most photogenic urban landscapes.

Join Muni Diaries and Lomography SF for a Muni-themed photo workshop. First, we’ll go over beginners’ tips and tricks for analog street and transportation photography. We’ll focus on how to shoot on Muni — one of our fair city’s best photography muses — and outside of it. Then, we’ll turn you loose with a fine camera — La Sardina or Diana Mini — so you can put those tips into practice ASAP. If you’ve got your own 35mm Lomography camera, you’re more than welcome to bring it and shoot with that!

When:
1 p.m., Sunday, July 22
Start to finish should be roughly three hours.
Workshop starts at the Lomography Gallery Store in Union Square:
309 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA
(415) 248-0096

Cost:
$10 per person or $7 for students, plus up to an additional $16 for various developing/digitizing/printing options.

But wait, there’s more:
Heads up, sharpest shooters: the best photo shot at the workshop wins a prize.

How to sign up:
RSVP as “Going” right on the Facebook invite if you’re interested. Or you can call, email, or RSVP in person to the Lomography store to secure your spot. Space is limited so get on it!

Certified Organic Snackery on Muni

100 Muni Stories

Muni snacks are often a mixed bag, literally and figuratively. Above, we’ve got just about everything but the bag: potato chips, Skittles, sardines, and cheese dip. Sometimes, you even eat something out of your shoe. (OK, so maybe it’s only that guy.)

One rider kicked it up a notch, though:

As the philosopher Drake said, “Oh, you fancy, huh?”

We’ve got your best (and simultaneously the worst) of eating on Muni right here.

Muni Jams to the Tune of Boyz II Men

100 Muni StoriesIn which a Muni bus turns into every single one of my middle-school dances:

I love the Muni singalong for its complete absurdity and ability to create bonds between annoyed passengers. This isn’t the first time it’s happened, either: a couple years ago, F-Market/Wharves riders channeled Lady Gaga with “Poker Face.”

I’m almost certain there’ve been Journey singalongs — among others — that’ve gone undocumented, so spin us a Muni yarn today.
