Tara Ramroop has laughed, cried, and commiserated with this amazing community from the start. She's been writing for as long as she can remember and riding Muni for more than a decade.

Four more days! Muni Diaries Live is Saturday, y’all.

Twice a year, like parents gone wild, Muni Diaries leaves its forever-LOL social channels and website to fend for itself for a few hours so we can hit the bar: the Elbo Room, to be exact.

We have a really great reason to do it, too: bringing IRL storytelling to the Muni-riding masses. Muni Diaries Live is where we can all laugh, cry, and commiserate over the daily sensory overload that is San Francisco’s colorful public-transit system.

We are swooning over our stellar lineup. At our recent rehearsal, we shed tears of joy, of WTF OMG, and of poignancy — all fantastic signs of a fabulous show to come. Our performers run the gamut of “Hella SF”: from a rising star in drag, to bastions of print media, to self-proclaimed political geeks (just in time for Election Day!), they’re all bringing it on Saturday. And by “it,” I mean cool stories and unique perspectives on our fair city.

So, who’s in?

Future you will thank planning-ahead you for getting tickets ahead of time! They’re available now on Eventbrite, so get ’em while they’re hot.

Muni stop trick or treat? (No, really?)

img_20161019_223816012

Muni — and San Francisco — love Halloween. To make sure we really get into the spirit of things (ha! ha! ha…), someone either awesomely or creepily (depending on what kind of day you’re having) left some Tootsie Rolls, wrapped and all, at this Muni stop.

One of my favorite Halloween stories involves a Muni driver handing out candy to her beloved passengers on the 33, so I’m going to err on the side of “awesomely” to describe this admittedly strange cargo. Especially since far worse has been left behind at a Muni stop.

Who’s ‘Energized’ for the week? (Hint, not this commuter)

It keeps going and going and going…”

And by “it,” we mean the heaping dose of visual irony pictured here, courtesy of csuhpat1, who also points out the rush-hour manspreading action.

A friendly reminder that it’s only cool to man- or lady-spread in sparsely populated Muni vehicles.

Celebrating Muni in wonderful, wearable screenprint

Because who doesn’t need screenprinted designs of, surely no coincidence, some of the most colorful Muni bus routes?

The shirts (detail shot above) are the craftsmanship of Overstep, a T-shirt and graphic arts studio based (duh) in Northern California. They’re at the Ferry Plaza artist market every week Friday through Sunday, or good old-fashioned mail order is also an option for T-shirts. Check out the Overstep Etsy shop here.

Say what you will about her, but Muni is one hell of a muse.

Footloose, fancy-free, fab: SF Trolley Dances are back

epiphany

The Muni muse just keeps on giving.

Epiphany Productions’ 13th Annual San Francisco Trolley Dances are back on this weekend, Sat., Oct. 15 and Sun., Oct. 16. The admission-free festival has been dubbed “a gift to the City” by past attendees; we are always down for reminders of our thriving creative scene.

The two-day dance festival features amazingly talented performers, including members of James Graham Dance Theater and drag queen Fauxnique, sharing their art with the world in, on, and around transit in the Castro and SoMA ‘hoods.

Admission is free with Muni fare.

Digital underground: ‘Tron-like’ art installation coming in 2017

bart_lightshow

It’s also pew pew and Minority Report, don’t you think?

Illuminate is an upcoming transit-oriented art installation by George Zisiadis and Stefano Corazza. It looks and sounds pretty cool: Starting in 2017, LED lights blinking overhead on Market Street will correspond to the movement of BART and Muni Metro trains underground, according to a Business Insider report.

To ask the obvious “joke not-really-a-joke, for real though…” questions: Is it just a stack of different, stationary colors at 6 p.m. rush hour? Does it go backward when the trains are late? ’cause that would not be the future I ordered.

All half-jokes aside, our transit makes a lovely muse for public art — intentional or not. Verdict: Neato, provided it’s not powered by a frighteningly sentient MCP.
