Your Thoughts: Free Muni for Schoolkids?

Kids loving Muni

Mayoral candidate Leland Yee made a splash last week by calling for Muni to issue passes to San Francisco public school students. According to SF Appeal, Supervisor David Campos joined school and transit advocates at today’s SFMTA Board meeting to demand the same. SF Public Press’ Jerold Chin tweets that the item made it to next week’s official SFMTA agenda.

As SF Weekly notes, fares account for around 25 percent of Muni’s annual revenue. But the idea is plausible; for example, offering the passes only certain times of year, and only for low-income students.

We’re curious what you think. We already know how many of you feel about Muni buses and streetcars filled with children. But what about public school students? Should they get a free ride?

Muni token wine stopper, FTW

Well, happy freakin’ birthday to me. Over the weekend, a friend gave me this early bday gift: a Muni token wine stopper. Some guy in Sacramento makes wine stoppers with various items like this at the top, and my friend happened to notice this gem. Oddly, she thought I might like it.

It reminds me how some people think I’m a little more into Muni than I actually am. Don’t get me wrong — editing Muni Diaries is a total joy. And ephemera like Muni tokens make me happy. But, it’s not like I’m obsessed or anything …

Thank you, Jill!

Muni Bus for Sale

Got a spare $12K laying around? If you do, check out this steal: a 1969 GMC Fishbowl New Look bus with a rad orange Muni paint job is up for auction on eBay. You read that right: There’s a Muni bus for sale. We’ve told you about New Look buses on Muni Time Capsule before. Check out that post if you’re thinking about making a bid.

This isn’t the first bus on sale — the guys at SFist spotted another bus for sale last year. We’ve also seen a Muni fare box for sale on Craigslist. If you’re the one who bought that fare box, why not buy a bus to keep it company? Or maybe this is perfect for the kind of person who’d buy a Muni shelter?

We’ll do our best to keep up with the auction and get in touch with the winning bidder.
