What’s that? You didn’t think Muni could be cute? Like, no way in hell?

Think again, curmudgeon. This Saturday and Sunday mark Muni Heritage Weekend. SFMTA and Market Street Railway will operate vintage buses, a special cable car, and a few old streetcars from 10 a.m. to 5 both days, giving the public a chance to see how far we’ve come from the old days [insert your cynical jokes here].

The old buses will leave from the San Francisco Railway Museum on Steuart Street between Market and Mission streets, near the Ferry Building and Embarcadero.

No matter what your plans are this weekend, you should totally do this.

For more info on the vehicles that will return to operation this weekend, visit Market Street Railway.

Muni Metro lines personified

metro_people

Your Muni route is totally a person. A flawed, wonderful, terrible, smelly person full of flaws and smelly people. But dependable, ultimately. Right?

Julian of Seismogenic has taken that idea hella steps forward. He conjured the characters you see above to represent Muni Metro’s seven lines.

The T-Third and the K-Ingleside. They’re that couple. You know the one. Attached at the hip, refer to themselves as “we” and never “I,” really need to get a room that’s more private than West Portal. The K is spastic and erratic and generally nuts, with a bit of an evil streak. The T is used to dealing with a lot of mayhem, so he can handle the K’s neuroses most of the time. He’s generally pretty chill in the face of everything, unless there is baseball, at which point he flips his shit too.

OMG, they are “that couple.”

Check out the rest of Julian’s descriptions at his Tumblr.

Are you liking Muni’s new 5L-Fulton Limited route?

Muni debuted a new line today: the 5L-Fulton Limited. It’s basically the 5-Fulton with limited stops and is meant to speed up rush-hour commutes along that line.

Here’s a sampling, good and bad, of what some of you had to say via Twitter this morning:

  • Derek: “The new 5L is life changing.”
  • Justin: “20 minutes from home to downtown; thanks SF Muni for the 5 Limited and for making Monday almost bearable. #sfmuni
  • Laura: “#SFMuni success. Day one on the 5L and it was amazing.”
  • Ashley: “I was soo amped about the new 5L for my commute but the driver seems to not have been trained. Still [stopping] at every stop. #fail

Well, we have “life-changing,” gratitude, “almost bearable,” “amazing,” and a driver that possibly missed the training session. Sounds like the 5L is fitting right in to the Muni fold. To all of our Richmond District enthusiasts: What colorful descriptions do you have for Muni’s new 5L-Fulton Limited?

Five Muni seatmates

5-things

Sometimes it’s hard to be indifferent about the person sitting next to you on Muni. To wit:

  1. How do I say “Hi, I like your TARDIS keychain!” to a complete stranger on the train without being creepy? #muni
  2. Flattered, but taken, guy who won’t courtesy scoot on the empty 5-Fulton.
  3. OH on #Muni: “I’m an old man, what else am I gonna do? All I got to do now is DIE!”
  4. To the guy who thought it would be fun to suddenly take up half my seat when I took out my 3DS: may all your bacon burn.
  5. This guy is preaching about how the Douglas fir is the best Christmas tree ever. I love muni #munidiaries

This week’s Five Things on Muni is brought to you by @amychinny, @spiegelmama, @CaltrainManners, @mayenedesign, and @micanbar. Share your findings at @munidiaries.
