Heading to the polls today? We should hope so! There are three transit-related measures on today’s ballot. How did you vote on these?

Prop A: San Francisco Transportation and Road Improvement Bond. ballot text
StreetsblogSF on A: “A promising step toward building out the safe, reliable networks for transit, walking, and biking that San Franciscans need.”

San Francisco Chronicle on A: “If you ride Muni — a category that includes just about everyone — then the idea of better service should interest you. This measure would spend $500 million to dent a $10 billion-plus backlog of improvements. The bond measure has money for street repaving, repair yard upgrades, and more transit and bicycle lanes.”

Giants win the World Series, people break Muni windows

We warned/begged you!

The Giants won the World Series, and guess what happened afterward? People climbed on top of Muni and broke a couple of windows, naturally. This is why we can’t have nice things!

Last night, SFMTA suspended bus services “due to safety concerns,” though Muni Metro service on the surface streets and underground was still operational.

Here’s one more of a busted-up Muni bus:

1958 Giants fans take Muni to Seals Stadium

Whether you’re lucky enough to be at the World Series game today, you might appreciate this piece of history from SFMTA’s Photography Archive. This photo of the 22-Fillmore loading and unloading passengers was taken at Seals Stadium on April 29, 1958, the very first year that the Giants called SF home. The passengers were on their way to see the Giants vs. Phillies.

Seals Stadium was on 16th at Bryant, and this photo was taken just about a year before the stadium was demolished in 1959 when Candlestick Park was completed. The old site of Seals Stadium is now the Safeway shopping plaza.

Okay, history lesson over. Time to don your orange and black! Go, Giants!

Three Winning Moves Seen on Muni

Most people just get on the bus and plug their earphones in, but these fine riders have turned it up to 11 by busting out some absolutely awesome bus-riding moves. Hot from our Twitter wires, may I present the three most awesome moves seen on Muni this week:

  1. Man in motorized wheelchair on Muni after parking his ride: “The eagle has landed!” with a jaunty thumbs up. Sir, you’re golden.
  2. Trio singing “Cruella Deville” on 21 Hayes.
  3. A passenger’s Chihuahua eating flaming hot Cheetos on the 31. Classic.

This is what San Francisco-style kindness looks like

Camaraderie among Muni passengers really brings out some of the most surprising moments of kindness. Muni rider Zann sent us this “Only on Muni” story via Facebook.

This was on an inbound 24, as we crossed over Cortland:

This young guy gets on the 24, totally reeking of pot. He sits and opens his hand and has a handful of loose buds and shake. He pulls out a dollar and tries to wrap the weed in it, when this old lady next to him says, “Honey, you’re gonna spill that all over. Take this.” She pulls a handkerchief out of her purse and holds it open for him while he dumps the handful into it, then folds it up nicely and hands it to him. He offers her a piece as a thank you, and she refuses it. “No thanks, Honey, I don’t touch the stuff.”

It really was a magical “only in SF” moment, and a totally unashamed and candid interaction between them.

I always knew there was a reason I love people who carry handkerchiefs!
