See the best of Muni Diaries live on stage on Nov. 5

driver_doug_MDL13_large

You’ve seen Muni bingo, Muni haiku, a one-woman band, a puppet show, and stellar storytellers on stage … What else do we have in store for you at the next Muni Diaries Live? You’ll have to come party with us at the Elbo Room on Nov. 5 to find out! The full lineup is here, and it’s gonna be a good one.

For this show, we are adding something a little different: when you buy a ticket, you can also give to Food Runners, the San Francisco non-profit organization that’s currently delivering over 15 tons of food a week that would otherwise be thrown away. Food Runners picks up excess food from businesses and delivers it to agencies feeding the hungry.

Subway riders pit Donald Trump against techno music

These subway riders are demanding for less Donald Trump, which is completely reasonable. You may not totally love what they want to replace him with, but at this point, we’ll take it over He Who Rides BART Better Than You.

Thank you to Muni rider Michelle Bird for bringing this excellent video to our attention.

Next Wednesday, Revel in Muni Nerdery at Nerd Nite!

old fast passes sfpl oct

Hey nerds! And I mean that in the best, most complimentary, you’re-my-people way: next Wednesday’s Nerd Nite features none other than transit reporter (and upcoming Muni Diaries Live storyteller) Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez, who will take you on an express ride through the colorful history of the Fast Pass. Did you know that Harvey Milk was a champion of the Fast Pass?

If you haven’t been to Nerd Nite, it’s an “informal gathering at which nerds get together for nerdery of all sorts (well, mostly presentations and drinking). Nerds and non-nerds alike gather to meet, drink and learn something new.” It’s pretty much the best nerd gathering I can think of.

This month’s show also features “Love Unhinged: King Pedro & the Corpse Bride of Portugal” by Annetta Black, and “Through the New Looking Glass: Reality Capture from the Camera Obscura to 3D Scanning, VR and AR” by Scott Page.

Come meet us at the Rickshaw next Wednesday so we can be proper nerds together.

This is either the best or worst thing you’ve ever smelled on Muni

durian-on-muni

Depending on your preference, this is either the best or worst thing you’ve ever smelled on Muni. Those of you who have been or live in the tropics: am I right? Spotted by @chuinonthis on Instagram, these two durian fruits are just chillin’ free on the seat. They’re not even wrapped in layers of newspaper and garbage bags like how my aunt used to smuggle them on the plane.

If you’ve been to southeast Asia, you know that durian is famous for its potent smell. Anthony Bourdain famously said that the scent is “indescribable, something you will either love or despise…Your breath will smell as if you’d been French-kissing your dead grandmother.” It’s so bad that Malaysian public transit banned it from its trains.

But here on good ol’ Muni, you can let your freak flag fly, durians included! I’m told that the actual fruit tastes like a lovely sweet custard.

BART sign hacker reserves priority seating for new types of riders

bart-reserved-seat-hack-by-deirdre

Someone with crafty tiny scissors and some stickers amended this BART priority seating sign for a new batch of under-served groups. Eagle-eye BART rider Deirdre O. spotted this gem and points out, “the guy with the cane has a top hat, and the pregnant person has an alien bursting from her belly. You can’t see it well in the photo, but the alien has dozens of tiny sharp teeth.”

We approve of this leap of imagination!
