Pick an Exciting Name for Muni’s Boring Machine

The machines that will build the Central Subway tunnels need a name, and the SFMTA is asking you to vote on names of prominent San Francisco women to bestow on the machines for good luck.

Your choices:

  • Big Alma
  • Juana
  • Mom Chung
  • Firebelle Lil
  • Mary Ellen

These machines will excavate and construct the Central Subway’s northbound and southbound tunnels, traveling from SOMA through Union Square, Chinatown and North Beach.

I must admit that I didn’t know much about these prominent women of San Francisco, and at first I misread “boring” for “uninteresting” (also known as Movies Starring Jennifer Aniston).  To clarify, the voting website has more information about these women. This morning, @bartdiaries told me that “Anyone who doesn’t vote for Big Alma is a damned fool and should have their voting rights taken away.” You can decide for yourself and vote for your favorite two names at the Central Subway website.

Video: Silent Disco Flash Mob on BART

Hey, a DJ is on BART but everything’s quiet, and why is everyone wearing headphones? We just got this flash mob video from Russ Megowan, who’s been doing these “silent disco” flash mobs on BART on Saturdays. The guys brought a box full of wireless headphones and a DJ setup, and promptly started a party in your ears (only) on a BART train.

It’s all fun and games until a BART cop shows up, so you should watch the video to see what happens.

Wallet Lost, Wallet Returned!

Reader Avi H. thought his wallet was lost forever, but sometimes the universe gives you a break, even when it’s on Muni. Here’s Avi’s story.

About three years ago, I was on the 66 heading inbound to go to school. When I left the bus, my wallet had fallen out of my hoody-jacket’s pocket and onto the seat. I got off the bus to wait for the 48 and started digging in my pockets to find the transfer. Unfortunately my wallet wasn’t there! I began panicking. I knew the likely story is that my wallet will never be returned. I called Muni Lost and Found, talked to other riders waiting at the bus stop, and even tried running after the bus.
(Side note: I am used to living in places where people do not return things, and thefts are of a daily occurrence.)
