Rolling out the red carpet for new Muni lanes
They might be rolling out the red carpet for celebs at the Oscars this weekend, but here in San Francisco we’re getting a head start on the whole red carpet business. Via Burrito Justice, here is your daily dose of construction porn, Muni lane edition. I don’t know why I always assumed that the Muni lane was simply was painted red, but photos prove that’s not how it’s done!
Pretty cool.

Yep. It’s thermoplastic! They use red paint, too, but the plastic gives better traction and lasts far longer. You can also use a Methyl Methacrylate based paint, which lasts for even longer, but is very expensive.
Both, by the way, are why crosswalks and other lines on roads have that slightly raised look on them.
Are they slapping that stuff right on top of the potholes?
Unless MUNI drivers need a red lane to drive straight, this is not about MUNI, it’s about lane reductions and SF’s anti-car policy.
Lane markers aren’t painted on, but are laid down and burned in place like the red transit lanes Those little reflectors that shine white in the traffic direction and red in the other way are attached after a spot is heated up by a little burner.
