Muni Time Capsule: Old Streetcars of SF
Over on Muni Time Capsule today, we posted a couple photos of old streetcars and cable cars that used to run up and down the hills of San Francisco. Check it out over at Muni Time Capsule.
Thanks, Bernalwood.
Did you know that Samuel Kahn, the President of the Market St. Railway, got a patent in 1927 for white painted streetcar ends? The patent was for improved night time visibility of streetcars. That was the distinguishing factor for Market St. Railway cars from then until the company was bought out by Muni in 1944. The company slogan was “Ride the White Front Cars.” However, after consolidation in 1944, many ex-Market St. Ry. cars had their white ends painted cream because City policy (until 1948) was not to pay any royalties.
